Sanjoy Malik honored for outstanding leadership, professional achievements, and technological innovation

ATLANTA — April 10, 2015 — The University of Florida’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and Urjanet, the world’s first provider of automated utility data, announced today that the MAE Department has selected Sanjoy Malik, Founder and CEO of Urjanet, as the winner of the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

“The Outstanding Alumnus Award is a unique opportunity to recognize the extraordinary efforts and remarkable impact an individual has made, not only as a technical innovator, but also as a business and civic leader,” said David Hahn, Professor and Department Chair of MAE. “The award recipients are phenomenal exemplars of and ambassadors for the MAE Department and all its alumni. I am delighted that I have gotten to know Sanjoy in recent years and am very proud to formally honor him among our many successful alumni.”

The Outstanding Alumnus Award is the highest honor the MAE Department bestows upon an alumni and is in recognition of a particular achievement of noteworthy value, a series of such achievements, or a career of noteworthy accomplishments. The winners were chosen from a highly qualified group of nominee applications. Each nomination was reviewed by a committee appointed by the Chair of the Department and final selections were made.

“While it is an honor for me personally to receive this award from my alma mater, it is really a reflection on the unparalleled work and support of my team members, partners, family, and friends,” said Malik. “I wouldn’t be in this position today if it weren’t for them.”

After founding two other companies, Air2Web and Synchrologic, Sanjoy wanted to rally a very talented team around an opportunity to do something big – something that mattered – with significant economic and environmental value propositions. He found a big opportunity at the intersection of three global topics: energy, sustainability, and big data. Sanjoy realized that many companies struggled to get the data they needed to decrease operational costs and improve financial and environmental performance. He created Urjanet based on the idea that utility data is the foundation of all energy decisions and that efficiently collecting timely, reliable, and accurate data is the first step to reducing energy cost and carbon emissions.

Today, Urjanet solves the fundamental problems that had plagued the energy management industry for decades. With Sanjoy’s contributions, Urjanet is becoming the global industry standard for energy data and supporting the growth of the entire energy management ecosystem. The company is consistently recognized for its forward-thinking products and services by its Fortune 500 customers, as well as analysts and industry publications.
