SchoolDude Taps Urjanet for Big Energy Data

SchoolDude will leverage Urjanet’s energy data to support more than 6,000 educational institutions’ energy management initiatives to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.

ATLANTA and CARY, NC — April 16, 2014 — SchoolDude and Urjanet today announced their partnership to provide big data energy management solutions to school systems. Both companies are teaming up to solve one of the biggest issues facing educational institutions’ sustainability and energy efficiency efforts: the challenge of acquiring and managing the data organizations need to make smarter, more profitable and eco-friendly energy decisions.

“We are excited to partner with Urjanet, especially as energy costs remain one of the largest expenses within a school’s maintenance and operations budget. Our mission as a company is to assist educational professionals in better managing operations and saving money, which in turn helps make them more successful. Integrating with Urjanet’s Big Energy Data supports our mission to be a good steward of our client’s trust and investment,” said Lee Prevost, President & Co-Founder.

According to the Department of Energy, U.S. school districts spend $6 billion each year on energy — second only to salaries. On a more local basis, kindergarten through high school (K – 12) buildings in the U.S. spend an average of 67 cents per square foot (ft²) on electricity and 19 cents/ft² on natural gas annually. In a typical school building, lighting, space heating, and water heating represent the bulk of total use, making those systems the best targets for energy savings. Energy usage must be understood before it can be reduced. That’s why acquiring accurate, complete and timely energy data is the critical first step for organizations to identify energy cost and carbon emission reduction opportunities.

To help solve the problem of aggregating good utility data, SchoolDude partnered with Urjanet to obtain real-time access to data from utility providers. Urjanet’s Big Energy Data services automate the collection, normalization and delivery of data from more than 800 utility providers across North America. SchoolDude’s clients will then be able to leverage Urjanet’s big utility data to make decisions for reducing both utility costs and carbon emissions.

“For schools systems with multiple facilities, gathering good energy data is a daunting task because there are no energy data standards in the industry,” said Urjanet CEO, Sanjoy Malik. “Each utility speaks a different language with different structures, rates, semantics, and tariffs. Urjanet has a solution to this problem, and by partnering with SchoolDude we can help schools make smarter, eco-friendly decisions which will ultimately save taxpayers money.”
